I'm having trouble getting Google Hangouts to work on my Ubuntu 12.04
home PC (32-bit) under Firefox 20.0.
Each time I try to join or start a Hangout, the web page tells me to
install their plugin 'Install the Hangouts Plugin to get started' ,
and I go thru the steps to do so, but then when I try again, it tells
me to install again. This is even after restarting Firefox or
rebooting.
I've tried removing and installing it more manually via:
sudo apt-get remove google-talkplugin
sudo apt-get install google-talkplugin
And those seemed to work fine, but didn't fix the problem.
This installed google-talkplugin (libnpgoogletalk.so) version
3.17.0.0-1.
The about:addons page does not list anything that seems to be the
talkplugin or hangout-related, so it looks like firefox is not
finding or recognizing the plugin (or finds it invalid or something).
But there is a /opt/google/talkplugin/libnpgoogletalk.so library
installed, and there are two links to it:
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libnpgoogletalk.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpgoogletalk.so
(it looks like /usr/lib/firefox/plugins is directory being used).
The /etc/log/syslog doesn't seem to have anything related to this
re-install.
Is there a way to to get more diagnostics about the firefox plugin
checking? Can I tell it to add a particular dynamic library (.so)
file
(and get log messages from that)?
Or is this a known problem already being worked on?
Thanks,

Classic Hangouts video calls no longer work with the Firefox browser. This is because Firefox no longer supports plug-ins, which are required for classic Hangouts voice and video calls. As Mike Williams stated in a March 1, 2017 email: Google announced late last week that Google Hangouts will not work with the next release of the Firefox browser (Firefox 52) coming on March 7. Hangouts relies on plugins to enable video and audio calls, and Firefox has announced that it would end support for browser plugins on it’s 52 release to help improve performance and security.
